FoxyProxy:Mozilla Firefox 3.5 ADD On

FoxyProxy is a Mozillla Firefox 3.5  extension which automatically switches an internet connection across one or more proxy servers based on URL patterns. Put simply, FoxyProxy automates the manual process of editing Firefox’s Connection Settings dialog. Proxy server switching occurs based on the loading URL and the switching rules you define.

Animated icons show you when a proxy is in use. Advanced logging shows you which proxies were used and when. QuickAdd makes it a snap to create new URL patterns on-the-fly. FoxyProxy is fully compatible with Portable Firefox, has better support for PAC files than Firefox itself, and is translated into more than 25 languages.

Firefox 4.0 new Mock up Themes & skins

Mozilla has released mock-up themes for the new Firefox 4.0. They seem to be mulling over whether to have the tabs on top, a bit chromish or to have the tabs at the bottom. They have released both the themes probably to get an idea of the response.
Mozilla is thinking aloud on the pros and cons of locating the tabs. The advantages of having the tabs on top Mozilla feels are, Vertical space will be saved, extra visual element will be added as the tabs have to connected to some thing. Distance to page controls will be shortened.
The disadvantage of such a move Mozilla feels are that the users will be confused by the unfamiliar location. As space is removed from the title bar only shortened version will be displayed in the tab. Some space may be lost as the tabs will be sandwiched between the application icon and the window widgets.

The other change includes adding a book mark widget in place of a Book Marks menu or tool bar.
It is also intended to attach a combo/Refresh/ Stop/Go button that is at the end of the location bar. When at rest the button does not change its color and is the same as the location bar. When some thing is being typed in it turns green in response and when a page is being loaded it turns red.

Mozilla Firefox 3.5 Add On : Rein

A new add on theme has been released by Mozilla for Firefox 3.5. It is a clean simple Firefox theme with invisible user interfaces when in use and beautiful design when not.

Mozilla adds that “the theme covers every thing : all built-in toolbar icons, sidebars, Add-ons Manager, Library, Options, Download Manager”, probably inspired by Mac. Rein in German means pure and has been developed by Naoto Kusumi.

Mozilla Firefox 3.5 Add Ons : Full Screen Video and Skins

By now you probably know that one of Firefox 3.5 main features is the ability to show video encoded in Theora format natively, that is without the need of a plugin or any other software.

As good as this is, it has no option for showing the video in full screen. But as usual, it didn’t take much time before a extension came to the rescue to provide the necessary feature (in fact it has been available before Firefox 3.5 final).

Full Screen Video, by Dao Gottwald adds an option to video’s context menu to view a video in full screen mode. Right-click, select and watch.

fullscreenvideo

There are a couple of caveats though: the video restarts when switching to full screen but I found it to be a problem much less annoying than I thought it would be. Also, full screen is only achieved on Windows. On other platforms it’s just a maximized window.

And if you don’t like the native video controls or get bored of them, you can customize them as almost everything else, Firefox audio and video controls are customizable (more work for theme authors!).

Long time community member, Ken Saunders, has released some cool skins you can try simply editing your userChrome.css file in your profile folder. Check Ken’s cool video player themes.

“Inspired by the need for larger media player controls that are displayed on the media player for open media (audio and video) now supported by Firefox 3.5 (awesome isn’t it), I created what I call a large, high visibility skin. While it’s true that one can use full page zoom to enlarge the size of a video (now you know), they may not always want to enlarge the whole video so the Hi-Vis-Light skin allows me (and hopefully others) to see the media controls at even small media window sizes including and especially the time and duration labels”.

“After I discovered how easy that it was to edit the videocontrols.css (though very time consuming), I decided to create a few more skins for the media player controls. I have others in the works including more colorful ones and a Hi-Vis Black one, and I’m sure that once it gets out that this is a piece of cake to do (or pie, whatever you prefer), there will be quite a number of new media player control skins being created including by those that will feel the need to create stupid ones that emulates Windows Media Player (etc) which of course goes against the grain of the open media concept itself”.

Mozilla Firefox 3.6 : Curtain Raiser

Mozilla is not resting on its laurels now that Firefox 3.5 has held its ground and has shown the world that it is entrenched firmly in the minds of the users world wide. Mozilla has quietly let it be known that its engineers are already working on the next version,  Firefox 3.6 tentatively named Namoroka. Mozilla would be channelising its energies to improve the responsiveness, the quickness of tab creation and the getting ready time of the new version of the browser. These changes Mozilla expects will be strikingly evident and pleasingly perceptible.

Firefox  3.6 also called Namoroka is expected to adjust itself to users history and preferences and evolve after due learning process to customize itself suiting the needs of the user. This apart from being able to execute automatically can also be defined.

Apart from provision of utilities and themes that can be added Firefox 3.6 may be enabled with commands that perform complex tasks and execute them with out burdening the user.

Mozilla also intends to seamlessly integrate the Desktop with your web pages and will be applicable with all the existing OSs. By the time Namoroka arrives it may not be able to integrate with older OSs.

It would be premature to predict the exact nature of the changes Namoroka will have over and above what Mozilla already intends as it is an evolving process. But one can safely give a time frame of one year for the new product to see the light of the day.

Mozilla Firefox 3.5 Review

Mozilla Firefox 3.5 has held its head high in the face of stiff competition in the browser wars. As this news goes on air more than 6 million people have downloaded Firefox 3.5 and the download number is still a healthy average of 25 downloads per second.. Most of the features of Firefox have been covered by us but here is a fresh look at the features of Mozilla Firefox 3.5.

Private Browsing

That the speed of Firefox 3.5 has been greatly enhanced is now common knowledge. The welcome inclusion has been Private Browsing that has at last become c common feature of all the browsers. Unlike the visual indication of other browsers Firefox 3.5 gives you only a crisp message and you can get on with the business of  Firefox 3.5 conveniently forgetting everything when you are in the private Browsing mode. Though applicable when you are not in Private browsing is the feature where you can ask Firefox 3.5 to forget the subdomain of a site in history. This feature in private mode does not make sense anyway as the browser does not remember all the things anyway. To enable this you have to go to “History”, select the site, “Right Click” on it and choose “Forget this site”. A convenient way of removing sites that you don’t fancy any more.

Geo Location Awareness

Many a time application you may be using would want information of your physical location. Firefox 3.5 finds this out by triangulating your position from the surrounding Wi Fi networks and “Google Location Services” using your IP address. To use this facility you should have a WWAN card. The important thing is Firefox 3.5 takes your permission before sending the information. This feature will come in handy when you are at a new place and any information that you seek is location specific for your search engine.

Tabs

You can now drag and drop your tabs to another window, rearrange them and even on to your desktop. A + sign has been provided on the tab bar that makes creation of tabs intuitive. As you drag your mouse .Firefox 3.5 indicates the future location of the tab if you would release the mouse

Restore Previous Session

The restore previous session not only remembers the history but also any text that you may have typed automatically gets saved. You should be conscious of this facility not to let sensitive information fall into wrong hand and it must be used in conjunction with private Browsing if you use facilities outside for your work.

Firefox 3.5 Downloads, This Race is for Real

firefox

The race for downloading Firefox 3.5 is on.

Firefox holds the World record in Guiness Book for the maximum number of down loads in a day, for its version Firefox 3.0 which touched 8 million.

When last reported on the net it was downloaded 1.3 million times. The down load rate then was hovering between 50 to 100 down loads per second.

Although it has not been announced officially After 24 hrs after its release ( we presume) more than 3 million Firefox 3.5 were down loaded and the rate of down loads was hovering between 40 and 55.

This is by no means a mean achievement considering the competition Fire Fox was facing. For e.g it was publicized that Safari was down loaded by 11 million people in 3 days. This included the users of earlier versions but the interesting fact about Safari was that of the 11 million downloads 6 million were windows based users.

So Mozilla must have had an element of doubt as to its performance. But the way Firefox 3.5 is standing up to competition it should touch 8 -9 million in 3 days.

The verdict seems to be in favor of Firefox that it has not been cowed down by competition and has been able to stand its ground.

The stats for download of Firefox 3.5 are available in real time at the below given site and Mozilla is asking its users to ping so that it can come out with the exact statistics.
