Iphone- Its the most widely used mobile now. No other diminutive device has enthralled the world’s collective conscience in iphone. In the last one year it has accumulated an arguable reputation of being the smartest smart phone and hottest drool gadget on Planet Earth with an incredible bank of over 50’000 tightly integrated applications that span virtually every genre of working, gaming, fooling around, and oh yes taking and making calls. Fortified with Apple’s pedigree for delivering path-breaking and cult-initiating products, tweaked by the thumping reputation of its predecessor triumphs, the third edition of the iphone – the 3GS – launched a few weeks ago in the US and sold over one million handsets in the first three days flat. Now, as it gets ready to debut in India, here’s what you can expect…
In terms of speed and performance, the iphone 3GS is faster that its previous version. (Well, speed is what the S in the moniker stands for). So you can except to surf the web faster, open apps more quickly etc. It’ll also have better – albeit marginally, not phenomenally by all accounts – batter life than its precursor, the 3G.
While the 3GS retains the same screen.from factor and physical dimensions, its memory has been upped to 32GB at the top end. But more than memory what many are more kicked with is its new 3 megapixel autofocus camera. the iphone can finally record – and edit – video now. The autofocus camera n the 3GS auto adjusts exposure, colour and contrst and includes an automatic macro focus for tight, close up shots. In contrast, the previous phone had a fixed focus cemera that lacked any form of video capture.
Also impressive is the new handset’s voice control feature that allows hands free operation of the iphone and its embedded ipod functions. So you can utter appropriate commands aloud into the built – in microphone or handset microphone to dial by name or number and also can play music, speaking out the name of an artiste, album or playlist. A VoiceOver screen reader speaks what appears on the iphone 3GS display there by allowing visually impaired users to make calls, hear their e – mail, “listen to” web pages, and run applications, And for those who ,re interested, the iphone 3GS now also has a new built – in digital compass for instant navigation to add to the functionality of a built – in GPS that already existed.
Should you buy it ? If you already own an iphone 3G, perhaps not. Faster speeds, chunkier storage, a somewhat bettery, voice control and an improved video-enabled camera don’t quite justify junking the previous model. Unless you desperately require one of these key improvements. Upgrading your existing 3G’s OS to 3.0, if you haven,t done so already, should suffice. For those who have yet to own an iphone, wait and watch what price tag finally dangles from the 3GS before you make your decision. But there’s no denying that the iphone is one of the greatest mobile computing revolutions we have witnessed so far.

Music lovers of iPhone can now stream unlimited songs from Zune on to their iPhones. To make this happen you need to have the app OrbLiveApp from the Apple app store and install in your iPhone. This app acts as a link to the software that you have to install on your desk top which has to support Windows, which is essential.

In your Desktop that supports Windows you have to install “Orb” which is a tool that lets you access audio remotely. Orb is a free tool. Now You have to open Orb and create a free account with user name and pass word. Orb when configured lets you down load Zune pass files into your PC for 15$ a month out of which you can retain 10 numbers and this way you can build your collection.

Once the desk top is configured it connects with the iPhone. By tapping on the audio icon on the app in your iPhone all the tracks that have been downloaded to the desk top can be accessed.

A controversy broke out when Apple announced that “its Mac Books are the World’s Greenest”. The claim was countered by rival Dell which has a stake in the claim of “Green Products”.
The dispute was referred to NAD “National Advertising Division of the Council for Better Business Bureaus. It was then decided that Apple should drop its claim to the superlative and in the same breath added that others did not have a comparative rating for all categories of “note books”.
This is similar to simultaneously saying two things. That Apple should drop its claim and at the same time saying the others are not as green as Apple in the range of Mac Books.
The reason for this controversy is not far to look. The main one that comes to my mind is lack of sincerity in ensuring and implementing Green “Standards”. It is when implementing authorities lack sincerity it gives rise to competitive greenness and loop holes are exploited.
The root cause of the problem is EPEAT “Electronic Product Environmental Assesment Tool”. It lays down standards for conformation to and awards the products Gold, Bronze or Silver. The problem is companies have learned to get around the rating by showing more number of the same model to be rated with minor variation and bagging more gold than they are worth. Toshiba with maximum number of gold is an example of this. It seems Sony and Samsung are not far behind.
If only the Governments were as conscious as the people are of environmental friendliness Apple would not have been put to this discomfiture.

If you reach the point where your iPhone will no longer get past the start screen, as it happened to me, Apple offers a powerful option. You may have tried to restore your iPhone touch screen try the following steps to force the device into recovery mode. It is helpful for new iPhone users to know how to quit applications if they get stalled.
iPhone Recovery Mode
- Press home and sleep buttons until you see the phone power down.
- When power shuts down, let go of the sleep button but continue to hold the home button for a couple of seconds.
- Press the home button and connect it to your computer.
You will see the iTunes logo and USB cable appear on your phone in a fewsecond and iTunes will prompt you to restore the phone.
If iTunes and are unable to do so try this tutorial which will show you how to put your iPhone touch into DFU mode. Please read the instructions carefully when downgrading in order to avoid any problems along the way.
iPhone DFU mode
DFU mode is a mode where the iPhone will be made to force a restore of the firmware into whatever version firmware it is given. The DFU mode application is somewhat dicey and setting the time is essential to get it to DFU mode.
- First, Open up iTunes, plug in your iPhone to the CPU’s USB port. Turn on your CPU’s speaker and make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (8.0.2)
- Press the Home button at top right and the Power button simultaneously, until the screen goes black and the device turns off.
- Release the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button simultaneously. Your iPhone should have turned off and the screen should be off.
- After approximately 10-20 seconds, you will hear a beep from your CPU as if it had just recognized a new hardware device, now iTunes should recognize it in DFU mode.
After iTunes recognizes the iPhone, release the Home button. You will know when the display is blank that you have put your iPhone correctly into DFU mode and that there is nothing on your device.

Attention lazy nerds: a filthy gizmo is a sign of being a lazy nerd. You need to clean it every now and then dude to keep it shining all the time. The display screen on the gizmos needs to be cleaned to give you super clarity. Also, the body needs to be cleaned spotlessly.
Lately, in a survey done by ‘market research firms‘, it has been analyzed that the gizmos hold equal amount of bacteria that is there in a toilet. Quiet alarming! But true. Especially, with most children having easy access to these gizmos it is further recommended to keep them absolutely clean and shiny.
Adherence to few simple guidelines will ensure that your expensive device remains clean and attractive as well. You must avoid using bare hands while cleaning as it leaves streaks of your fingerprints on the screen thereby hindering the quality of display.
The Apple tech support team offers simple methods that will clean your Apple gizmos perfectly. They recommend everything you need to clean, protect and preserve your Apple products at home or on the go. It enables you to clean and protect your gadgets weekly, for a year or more – depending on how many times you clean them weekly.
Cleaning the display screen
- Disconnect the power cord and verify that the product is turned off.
- A soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe dust from the screen must be used.
- Firstly, lightly dampen the cloth with water only and wipe the screen.
- Avoid spraying liquid directly on the screen.
Cleaning the body
- Shut down the product and disconnect all cables.
- A damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the exterior must be used. Most importantly, avoid getting moisture in any openings.
- Avoid spraying liquid directly onto the product.
- Avoid using aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives that might damage the finish.
It can be used on all Apple items:
- iPods: iPod control panel, display and case
- iPhones: display screen and entire case
- MacBook or MacBook Pro: Outer case, keyboard and display screen
- iMac: flat panel display, base and keyboard
Warning:
Don’t clean the screen with a cleaner containing alcohol or acetone. Always, use a cleaner intended for use with a screen or display. You must never spray cleaner directly on the screen as it may drip inside the display and cause damage.

The affordable Apple Airport Express is faster and better as it powerful enough to run a home Wi-Fi network and also small enough to be a mobile device. It connects up to 10 users, prints from anywhere and streams your music. As for Mac users, AirPort Utility is located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. And Windows users can access AirPort Utility by selecting Start > All Programs > AirPort.
AirPort Express makes creating a wireless network as easy as drinking a cup of coffee.
- Firstly, connect your DSL or cable modem to the Ethernet port on your AirPort Express.
- Secondly, open AirPort Utility, select your AirPort Express, and click Continue.
- Thirdly, follow the onscreen instructions to create your new network.

Streamlining Music
Take your iTunes library beyond your computer with AirPort Express and AirTunes.
- Firstly, connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
- Secondly, plug AirPort Express into an electrical outlet.
- Thirdly, open AirPort Utility, select your AirPort Express, and click Continue.
- Fourthly, follow the onscreen instructions.
- Finally, open iTunes and choose your stereo or speakers from the pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
Connecting a printer
Connect a printer to the AirPort Express USB port and access it remotely.
To enable printing using Mac OS X v10.3 or v10.4
- Firstly, open Printer Setup Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder).
- Secondly, select the printer from the list.
To enable printing using Mac OS X v10.5
- Firstly, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu and click Print & Fax.
- Secondly, click Add (+) and select your printer from the list.
- Thirdly, click the Add button.
Internet Access
AirPort Express connects people to each other through the web including, emails, share photos, movies, and other files. The AirPort Express includes a built-in firewall that creates a barrier that is automatically turned on between your network and the Internet, protecting your data from malicious Internet attacks. It will ensure that only people with the correct password can join your wireless network. A wireless Internet access requires a wireless-enabled computer, a base station or other access point, and Internet access (fees may apply). There are some ISPs that are not currently compatible with AirPort Express.

There are times especially, in the mornings when you have rush to office, an interview or catch a flight on time. Such days begin with barging into toilets and bath rooms. In many cases iPhone owners have dropped their Apple iPhones in the water sinks, bath tubs or toilets. On a rainy day the bad weather full of moisture can get your iphone steamy.
The iPhone problem is not quite strange as it has a reputation for being supersensitive to sweat and steam. There is a quick solution for all such mishaps. Firstly, shake your phone it heavily in all directions thereby removing excess water from the surface and then clean it with a soft cloth preferably cotton.
Thereafter, keep it within a box full of rice, as illustrated because it generally absorbs all the most moisture from the phone. After an hour place it in a dry area to ensure that most of the wetness has been evaporated. This way you can expect the handset to be dry from inside too and it’s completely dry. Then switch it ON to check that the phone is in working condition and not dead for sure.
Once this home remedy fails there is no better option than to contact the nearest Apple Iphone dealer or service center to replace your hand phone. If your warranty or service contract has expired then you will have pay $ 199 towards replacing the phone with an absolutely new device of similar model. I am thankful to a new wet iPhone replacement plan introduced by Apple this week. It is also known as discounted replacement and you avoid the agony of having to sign up for a new contract all for $199.
Regardless of the reason, Apple previously hadn’t too understood about water damage to the devices. Earlier, it used to require you to buy a new phone and start a new contract, putting a real damper on the whole iPhone-owning experience. Lately, the company is changing its tune. Beside, you are extending your cellular life service for another two years which I think is a bonus as well.
Also, you can always go for the iDive underwater case which is pretty safe. It will protect your iPhone under water up to 300 feet from any kind of wetness.

That Apple has a visionary at the helm and the strategy and vision has unfolded over a period of 2 years starting with iPhone first and then a year later with iPhone 3G and now and now it will be this June 19, the Apple iPhone 3GS is self evident.
One wonders about the fate of ‘iPhone Killers”. It is the sign of a leader that competition follows him because he sets the standards.
Now the smart phones have to worry about one more thing. The threat iPhone 3GS poses to the pocket camcorders and compact manufacturers as well, by the generation of shoot, edit upload videos to the you tube or wherever, without using a camera?
To make all these things and many more possible Apple is unveiling its mobile web browser 3.0, two days prior to the release of 3GS.. This can be downloaded for free by users of previous versions of iPhone.
The Apple 3GS, in which S stands for “speed’, is a pocket sized mobile computing system, which gives you bytes for your bucks, whether 16 GB or 32 GB, which comes with a capacitive touch responsive screen enabled operating system that is wi fi capable. Apple does not see the need for providing a key board other than the one on the screen.
Like the 3G the screen is disabled by a sensor a call is being attended to.
The instrument is also green with the glass being Arsenic free and the absence of mercury in the LCD and with out harmful chemicals like” Brominated Flame Retardant” and PVC.
All the capabilities of multimedia, integrated with mobile computing, of the 3G are existing in the 3GS. While editing the text it can be zoomed to a bigger size. The 3GS follows voice commands either in making calls are in selecting a tune. It also has voice read out facility in some functions. It can recognize several languages for this purpose and users are advised to check out if the facility exists for their language. The GPS features in the 3GS are better than that of 3G with the provision of navigational directions being provided turn wise. The key board can be increased in size by rotation of the instrument. Also additional features of the key board as and when required appear.
The physical shape of the 3GS is akin to the 3G. The optics of the iPhone have been incorporated into the 3GS. The LCD screen has been increased from 2 mega pixels to 3 mega pixels. Video recording in standard mode with a Video Graphics Array have been provided in the 3GS. This facility did not exist in the 3G. Video editing is a simple process in the 3GS and they can be uploaded by the wi fi facility through the net. The camera also has Auto focus facility which can be changed from object to object with a touch. It also has white balancing facility but not a LED flash.
Facilities like tethering and MMS are presently available but cannot be put to use because of the limitations of the carrier.
When one talks of Apple one cannot forget the App store which now has a healthy and rich collection of over 50,000 applications.
The Apple iPhone 3GS is also the International version and one has to wait with bated breath for the response not only in the U.S but across several countries where it will be released in the subsequent months.
